Lemonade Sodium Calculator

The Lemonade Sodium Calculator estimates the sodium content of homemade lemonade based on your exact recipe — batch volume, lemon juice type and amount, sugar, and any pinch of salt added for flavor or balance. Fresh citrus is naturally very low in sodium, but bottled juice and even a small salt pinch can change the total meaningfully.

Use it to answer how much sodium is in my lemonade for low-sodium meal planning, kidney-friendly nutrition, or everyday tracking. The tool also helps you see how homemade versions compare to typical packaged lemonade, which often contains extra sodium from preservatives and flavorings.

Enter your batch size, juice amount, juice type, optional sugar and salt, then set a serving size and press Calculate. You'll get total sodium, sodium per glass, and Percent Daily Value — with a clear step-by-step breakdown of every ingredient's contribution.

🧮 Lemonade Sodium Estimator

Total and per-glass sodium for your homemade lemonade recipe, including added salt.

grams of salt
fl oz per glass

Quick Start

Start by entering the total batch volume of lemonade you are making, then add the amount of lemon juice used and choose whether it is fresh-squeezed, from concentrate, or bottled. Fresh juice carries almost no sodium, concentrate adds a small amount, and bottled juice often picks up extra sodium during processing. Sugar and water contribute zero sodium, but sugar is still included so the recipe context is complete. If you add a pinch of salt to balance the tartness, enter the salt weight in grams — or tap one of the preset buttons for a quick estimate. Finally, set your glass or serving size and press Calculate sodium.

💡 If you usually pour larger glasses, remember that sodium per glass scales linearly with volume. A 12 oz glass has 1.5 times the sodium of an 8 oz glass from the same batch.

The Math Behind It

The tool converts every ingredient into its sodium contribution and then scales it to your serving size. Lemon juice sodium is found by multiplying the number of tablespoons by the sodium value for the juice type you selected. Added salt is converted using the fact that table salt is about 39.3% sodium by weight, so each gram contributes roughly 393 mg of sodium. The total is divided across the batch using the ratio of serving size to batch volume. Because the tool uses your actual batch volume, the result works for a single glass or a full pitcher.

  • Total sodium = (lemon juice sodium) + (salt sodium). Sugar contributes zero sodium.
  • Per glass = total sodium × (glass volume ÷ batch volume).
  • Percent Daily Value = per-glass sodium ÷ 2,300 mg, based on the FDA reference value.

The fresh-squeezed value (~0.15 mg per tablespoon) reflects USDA data showing raw lemon juice contains only about 1 mg sodium per 100 ml. Concentrated and bottled juices differ because of processing and added ingredients; actual values can vary by brand, so the tool uses reasonable typical figures.

Worked Examples

Example 1 — Fresh lemonade with no salt: A 64 fl oz batch made with 6 tbsp fresh-squeezed juice contains about 0.9 mg sodium. An 8 oz glass would contain 0.9 × (8 ÷ 64) ≈ 0.1 mg — essentially sodium-free.
Example 2 — Bottled juice plus a salt pinch: The same 64 fl oz batch made with 6 tbsp bottled juice (5 mg/tbsp) contributes 30 mg. Adding a 0.37 g pinch of salt adds 145 mg, for a total of 175 mg. One 8 oz glass carries 175 × (8 ÷ 64) ≈ 22 mg, or about 1% of the Daily Value.

These examples show why the juice type and salt choice matter far more than the amount of sugar. For anyone tracking sodium closely, the salt pinch is usually the biggest lever.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is homemade lemonade actually low in sodium? Yes, unless you add salt or use heavily processed bottled juice. A fresh-squeezed, salt-free recipe is effectively sodium-free, with under 1 mg per glass.

Why does bottled lemon juice have more sodium? Some brands add sodium-based preservatives or process the juice in ways that increase mineral content. Check the nutrition label because values vary widely.

Does sugar affect sodium? No. Sugar contributes calories but no sodium to the recipe.

Can I use this for other citrus drinks? The tool is calibrated for lemon juice. Lime juice has similar sodium, but the calculator is not intended for oranges or other fruits.
