How It Works
This calculator uses the MET (metabolic equivalent of task) method, the same approach used in exercise science and the Compendium of Physical Activities. One MET equals the energy your body burns at rest — roughly 1 kcal per kilogram of body weight per hour. An activity rated at 3.5 METs burns 3.5 times your resting rate.
Geocaching has no official compendium entry of its own, but it maps closely to hiking and orienteering. Example 2 — Imperial, hilly: A 165 lb hunter at 5.0 METs for 30 minutes (6 blocks). Weight in kg: 165 × 0.453592 = 74.8 kg. Per block: 5.0 × 74.8 × 0.08333 = 31.2 kcal. Total: 31.2 × 6 = 187.0 kcal.
Effort level changes the result dramatically. If the second example used a 2.5 MET stroll, the 30-minute total would drop to about 93.5 kcal — roughly half. Terrain and pace matter more than the number of minutes, which is why choosing the right effort level is your most important input.
