Formula and MET Values

Digging calories are estimated with the standard MET formula used in exercise physiology:

kcal = MET × 3.5 × body weight (kg) × time (min) ÷ 200

MET (metabolic equivalent) expresses the energy cost of an activity relative to resting. One MET is roughly the energy you burn sitting quietly. The intensity values used here follow the Compendium of Physical Activities, a widely cited reference in exercise science.

To go from calories to steps, the calculator assumes that walking briskly burns roughly 1 kcal per kilogram of body weight per kilometre. It estimates the energy cost of a single step from your weight and stride length, divides the digging calories by that figure, then converts the resulting step count into distance and walking time at a brisk 5 km/h pace.

Worked Example

A 70 kg gardener digs a new bed for 40 minutes at moderate intensity (MET 5.0):

kcal = 5.0 × 3.5 × 70 × 40 ÷ 200 = 245 kcal.

With a 75 cm stride, each step costs about 0.0525 kcal, so 245 ÷ 0.0525 ≈ 4,667 steps — roughly 3.5 km, or about 42 minutes of walking at 5 km/h.

If the same person digs vigorously (MET 8.8) for an hour, the result jumps to about 646 kcal and roughly 12,300 equivalent steps. That shows why intensity matters so much in any physical-activity estimate.

  • Be honest about intensity — most home gardening sits somewhere between moderate and vigorous, and short rest breaks should be excluded from the digging time.
