How It Works
Beer is about 90–95% water, so its density is close to 1 gram per millilitre. This calculator assumes 1 mL ≈ 1 g, which is accurate to within a few percent for most beers. That lets us turn volume into mass easily. The carbs per 100 g figure comes from typical values for each beer style; it represents the carbohydrate content before considering alcohol, which is not a carbohydrate.
The total carb calculation is simply: (carbs per 100 g ÷ 100) × total beer mass in grams. For a 500 mL beer with 4.0 g carbs per 100 g, that’s (4.0 ÷ 100) × 500 = 20 g of carbs.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Confusing fluid ounces with weight. The calculator converts fl oz to mL using the US fluid ounce (29.57 mL). A UK imperial pint is 568 mL, not 473 mL.
- Ignoring the number of drinks. Total carbs scale linearly with volume, so a 6-pack of IPA can add over 85 g of carbs.
- Using alcohol percentage as a carb proxy. Alcohol is not a carbohydrate; a high-ABV beer can have fewer carbs than a low-ABV malty style.
