The Math Behind It

Every food in the list has a fixed nutrient profile per 100 g, drawn from typical USDA FoodData Central values. To scale those values to your portion, the calculator uses one simple factor:

factor = portion weight in grams ÷ 100

Then every nutrient is multiplied by that factor:

  • Calories = factor × kcal per 100 g
  • Protein = factor × protein per 100 g
  • Carbohydrates = factor × carbs per 100 g
  • Fat = factor × fat per 100 g

For example, if your portion is 150 g, the factor is 1.5. If the food provides 130 kcal per 100 g, your portion provides 1.5 × 130 = 195 kcal. The macros scale the same way. If you enter ounces, the tool first converts to grams with 1 oz = 28.3495 g, so a 5 oz portion becomes 141.75 g and the factor is 1.4175.

Worked Examples

Example 1: Cooked white rice. Cooked white rice contains about 130 kcal, 2.7 g protein, 28.2 g carbs, and 0.3 g fat per 100 g. A typical 150 g serving works out to 1.5 × 130 = 195 kcal, 4.1 g protein, 42.3 g carbs, and 0.5 g fat. If you log rice into an app by cooked weight, this is the number to enter.
