The Formulas Behind the Tests

VO₂ max = (distance in meters − 504.9) ÷ 44.73

The 1.5-mile run/walk equation predicts VO₂ max from the time it takes to cover the distance:

The Rockport walking equation is a multi-variable regression that accounts for weight, age, sex, walk time, and heart rate:

Do the test on a flat, calm course on a day with mild weather. Warm up for 5–10 minutes first, pace yourself rather than sprinting at the start, and record time or distance with a reliable stopwatch or GPS watch. Repeat the test once or twice and use the best consistent result.
