How the Estimate Is Calculated

This calculator uses the standard MET (metabolic equivalent) approach from exercise physiology. One MET is the energy cost of sitting quietly — roughly 1 kcal per kilogram of body weight per hour. When you exercise, your energy expenditure rises to a multiple of that resting level, and that multiple is the MET value of the activity.

Calories per minute = (MET × 3.5 × body weight in kg) ÷ 200

In the formula, 3.5 represents the approximate oxygen consumption of a resting adult in milliliters per kilogram per minute, and 200 converts that oxygen cost into kilocalories. Because MET values are published for a typical adult performing an activity at a defined pace, the calculator applies an effort-level multiplier to adapt the base value: light effort uses 0.8×, moderate uses 1.0×, and vigorous effort uses 1.5×. If you enter your weight in pounds, it is first converted to kilograms by dividing by 2.20462.

Three examples show how the inputs come together — one in metric units, one in imperial units, and one with a light-effort multiplier.

Example 1 — Push-ups, metric units. An 80 kg person performs standard push-ups for 25 minutes at moderate effort. Base MET = 3.8, effort multiplier = 1.0, so adjusted MET = 3.8. Calories per minute = (3.8 × 3.5 × 80) ÷ 200 = 5.32 kcal/min. Over 25 minutes, total = 5.32 × 25 ≈ 133 kcal. That works out to about 319 kcal per hour, or roughly 19 minutes to burn 100 kcal.

Example 2 — Bench press, imperial units. A 150 lb person does 30 minutes of bench pressing at moderate effort. Weight in kg = 150 ÷ 2.20462 ≈ 68.0 kg. Base MET = 3.5, effort multiplier = 1.0. Calories per minute = (3.5 × 3.5 × 68.0) ÷ 200 ≈ 4.16 kcal/min. Total = 4.16 × 30 ≈ 125 kcal, or about 250 kcal per hour.

Example 3 — Light band work. A 95 kg person does 40 minutes of resistance band pressing at a light pace. Base MET = 3.0, light multiplier = 0.8, so adjusted MET = 2.4. Calories per minute = (2.4 × 3.5 × 95) ÷ 200 = 3.99 kcal/min. Total = 3.99 × 40 ≈ 160 kcal — a gentle session that still adds up over a week of consistent training.

Tips for More Accurate Estimates

  • Weigh yourself in the morning before eating for a consistent body-weight input — daily fluctuations in water weight can shift results by several calories.
  • Track active pressing time only. If you pause 30–60 seconds between sets, subtract rest minutes from the session time so the estimate reflects actual work rather than recovery.
  • Keep intensity honest. MET values for strength work assume a steady rhythm; if you are grinding through slow, tough reps, choose vigorous effort instead of moderate.

Limitations of the MET Method

MET estimates are population averages drawn from lab studies, not measurements of your individual metabolism.
